Why do people make war art?

People make war art for many reasons, like helping us to remember what happened during the war. They also create war art to show the horrors of war as civilians never really knew what was happening on the front line as the government use to censor everything and use propaganda.

One artist that stood out to me the most is Sir William Orpen, who painted quite gruesome pictures of trench warfare. Orpen was actually in the war, so he has seen these sights for himself instead of guessing and using photos. I think that war art is a great way to express how much civilians don't see and how the government keeps quiet. During ww1 and 2 the government used propaganda , which was a biased way of promoting political information, like trying to persuade men to go to war as the posters would say that they would become heroes, however many didn't even arrive home.
